MEASURE
What does a penny mean?
Nails are usually measured in units called "pennies," designated by the letter “d” for “denarius,” which is Latin for "penny." Nails measured this way range from 2-penny (2d) nails that are 1 inch long to 70-penny (70d) nails 7 inches long. Nails that are longer or shorter than those sizes are measured in inches.
The system of measuring nails in pennies probably began in England several hundred years ago, based on the price of 100 nails. For example, 100 4d nails would have cost 4 pennies. Nails with a squared shoulder under the head are measured from under the head to the tip of the point. All other nails and spikes are measured overall.
