  • Finish heads

    Finish

The small head is ideal for finish work where you want to conceal the nail head.

  • Countersunk heads

    Countersunk

Similar to cupped heads but with greater holding power. Designed to be concealed with filler or paint.

  • Duplex heads

    Duplex

Designed for temporary construction such as cement framing. Easy to remove due to dual head design.

  • Brad heads

    Brad

Similar to finish heads but with a round nail head. Easily concealed with paint and fill.

  • Cupped heads

    Cupped

Often found on drywall nails. Cupped heads can easily be concealed with putty.

Points

  • Long Diamond point

    Long Diamond

Easier to drive into harder material.

  • Medium diamond

    Medium Diamond

Most common, good for general use.

  • Short diamond point

    Short Diamond

Easier to drive than blunt points while still providing reduced chances of spitting harder wood.

  • Blunt points

    Blunt

More difficult to drive but reduces the chances of splitting hard wood.

  • Needle points

    Needle

Sharp point that enables the removal and reuse of the nail.

  • Chisel points

    Chisel

    Preferred point for trim applications.

Shanks

  • Smooth shanks

Most common, provides least amount of holding power.

  • Screw or spiral shanks

    Screw / Spiral

Used for hard wood. Twists into wood when driven for added holding power.

  • Barbed shanks

    Barbed

Offers slightly better holding power than smooth shank.

  • Ring Shanks

    Ring

Used for soft wood, rings separate wood fibers to resist pulling out.

  • Fluted Shanks

    Fluted

Used in concrete applications. Slightly twisted to provide holding power.

Coatings

  • Bright coatings

    Bright

    Natural uncoated steel finish.

  • Mechanical galvanized coating

    Electro-Galvanized

An electronic process which coats nails with a thin layer of zinc.

  • Blued coatings

    Blued

Heat-treated to form a thin oxide film on the surface, blue in color.

  • hot dig galvanized

    Hot-Dip Galvanized

A hot tumbling or hot-dipped process with zinc that meets ASTM A-153.

  • Vinyl coatings

    Vinyl Coated

A thin layer of liquid vinyl that provides easier driving of nail.

MEASURE

What does a penny
mean?

Nails are usually measured in units called "pennies," designated by the letter “d” for “denarius,” which is Latin for "penny." Nails measured this way range from 2-penny (2d) nails that are 1 inch long to 70-penny (70d) nails 7 inches long. Nails that are longer or shorter than those sizes are measured in inches.

The system of measuring nails in pennies probably began in England several hundred years ago, based on the price of 100 nails. For example, 100 4d nails would have cost 4 pennies. Nails with a squared shoulder under the head are measured from under the head to the tip of the point. All other nails and spikes are measured overall.

Expert
advice

transparent

VIBRATION

When constant vibration can work nails loose, such as with flooring, select ring-shanked nails to grab the wood fibers and prevent backing out.

transparent

SETTING FORMS

When building concrete forms or doing temporary construction, use double-headed (duplex/scaffold) nails. These can be driven into the wood up to the lower head. The second head remains exposed to allow easy pulling when the project is complete.

transparent

NAIL SIZE SELECTION

As a general rule when selecting nail sizes, the nail should be three times as long as the thickness of the wood through which it is driven. Two-thirds of the nails’ length can then provide the strength to hold the two pieces together.

transparent

TEMPERED HARDENED (HEAT-TREATED)

A heat treating process is used to harden temper hardened steel nails. This process applies to concrete nails and pneumatic joist hanger nails.

transparent

SPLITTING

Blunt the end of a pointed nail slightly by tapping it with a hammer. This allows the nail to tear the wood fibers, instead of spreading (splitting) them. When using more than one nail at a wood joint, always nail them diagonally to one another. Driving several nails into the same grain can cause splitting.

transparent

FINE WOOD FINISHING

To avoid marring fine wood, paneling, or woodwork when using finishing nails, drill a hole slightly larger than the nail head in a small piece of paneling, or use a piece of pegboard. Hammer the nail flush, then carefully remove the guide block and finish nailing with a nail set.

transparent

CLINCHING

Exposed nail points should be bent at right angles (clinched) to the wood grain rather than being driven directly into the grain, because while this makes it easier to bury the nail, it can also split the wood.

transparent

DURABILITY

To strengthen nail joints, nails should be driven in at an angle. Nails are easy to pull out when driven in straight.

transparent

BENDING

To avoid bending a nail, don’t watch the hammer. Keep your eye on the nail. Hold the hammer at the end of the handle and use a steady rhythm like a piston or pendulum.

transparent

STREAKING

To avoid streaking in cedar or redwood siding, decking or shingles, use aluminum or stainless steel nails. Hot-dip galvanized nails should not be used, because natural acids in these woods can react with the nail coating, resulting in streaking. All galvanized nails are rust resistant, not rust proof. Stainless steel nails are the only fastener approved for rust-proof applications.
